Today I started thinking about how I can write MCP servers for my own data to help with Claude Code assisted development. For example a knowledge base, a credential store, a task manager accessible by the agent via MCP

Netlify makes this super easy. All of this can be built on the platform. In fact, I just released a new official skill yesterday specifically for building custom MCP servers.

I've been doing this a lot lately. I like to think of the foundation as a personal app — deterministic API, database, etc. And then add an MCP server in front of it, handling auth keys however it makes sense.

Good MCP boundary: separate read, write, and secrets. Knowledge base: read + cited source Task manager: propose/write only with explicit action Credential store: never expose raw values, only scoped operations Most personal agents fail less from bad models than fuzzy permissions.
